Description

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics.

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...'

A Tale of Two Cities is arguably the greatest story of mistaken identity ever told, interweaving a heart-breaking family tragedy with the bloody French Revolution.

Dr Manette is released from imprisonment in the Bastille and is reunited with his daughter, Lucie. Two men - an apathetic English lawyer and an exiled French aristocrat - vie for her love in a time of uncertainty, sacrifice and terror.

Self-proclaimed by Dickens as 'the best story I have ever written', A Tale of Two Cities is an enduring epic of historical fiction.

About the Author

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and grew up in poverty. This experience influenced 'Oliver Twist', the second of his fourteen major novels, which first appeared in 1837. When he died in 1870, he was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey as an indication of his huge popularity as a novelist, which endures to this day.
